FRENCH BRIDAL COUTURE IN THE 90S

I have a whole library of bridal magazines, some dating back to the 1930s. Perusing early editions circa 1990, I run across plenty of those ridiculous, big puffy sleeves, bodices and skirts encrusted with such heavy bead work you can't find the fabric. There were also some magnificent gowns created back then by a group of talented designers, some so far ahead of their time it amazes me. And while there have always been gifted designers the world over, during this time the French did seem to be Fashion's chosen people for keeping couture pure. They had a knack for using just the right fabric on a particular silhouette; knowing how much detail would balance the design. They--great designers, French et all--also laid out the blue print for a lot of today's trends.
In the 1990s, we saw the emergence of the studio designer. These independents closely resembling the Etsy artisans of today, chose to create and show their own collections in ateliers and small shops all over the world. Private designers as they were also known were showcased first in the premiere issues of Wedding Dresses Magazine. Soon American editors picked up that significant bridal trends were being created not only in Paris and New York but wherever there was a talent that burned to create. Alas, twenty some years later not all these designers are still with us. All though have left their influence . . .

Lolita Lempicka

What ever happened to Lolita Lempicka? These days she's concentrating on her fragrance and bath lines more than anything else. The gown above is representative of the joyful and whimsical mood she brought to design in the nineties, her daring techniques and applications inspiring many designers today. I always thought she was the more refined version of someone like Betsey Johnson.

The Fleur d'Oranger pieces here are youthful and hint boho before its revival. The headpieces are particularly unique for the time when most brides, even those marrying semi-formal donned some version of veil.

The above dress is simply all class and timeless chic.

Though designer Ulla Maja popularized the use of pick up skirt techniques through the nineties, Nicole Legroux was using this technique as well. The hand rolled florals anchoring each tuft of silk here are an exquisite touch. A radical application back then, nowadays the pick up skirt can be found on almost every page of the David's Bridal Catalog as well as top New York collections.

Hanae Mori

Hanae Mori has retired from the runways but still has a few shops open in Japan. These days, like Lempicka, she concentrates on her fragrance lines.

Roxanna Farri

We've seen more fabric like this but back in the early 90s it was a novelty when Roxanna Farri introduced this skirt covered in sunflowers made of ribbon. The skirt and blouse combo would be ideal for the garden wedding in any age.

These last three images showcase the work of purist Michelle Arnaud. Check out the last photo in black and white. The hat/veil hybrid was . . . a tad experimental back then but now would be considered a wonderful option to the traditional veil

The late sixties/seventies era is known primarily for the wild and off-beat except for a few pockets of elegance here and there Thanks to a some savvy designers, the funk was fine-tuned into into high fashion. The era was the most politically charged of the century and invariably spilled over even into haute couture.

Another Belinda Belville masterpiece. My sister actually made this gown way back when as a bridesmaid frock. Though featured in Vogue Pattern Book April/May 1970, the precisely placed buttons, luxe taffeta and use of lace make this gown timeless, wearable in any decade.

What a day for a day dream . . . this is actually a Vogue Pattern for what was dubbed an 'Edwardian' gown. More mainstream to bridal than the above images, it mixes up two eras in one look; the floppy horse hair hat was a hark back to a vintage craze going on that celebrated the life of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchannan.

Boho looks of the 60s-70s era had a certain peasant element thanks to the influence of designers like YSL. Kerchiefs, bonnets and bandannas were introduced into bridal wear for the more informal wedding or brides who wanted to ditch the veil . . .

FINDING YOUR BRIDE STYLE

Still going through a dilemma about The Dress? Try this: Imagine the clothes you wear every day amped up in finer fabrics and more defined silhouettes. Next consider your venue and overall formality of the wedding or lack thereof. Wedding dates have a lot to do with decisions too. Your Dress: Mostly evening gown and chemise styles in lace and satin. You may be a 1950s retro buff who likes Candy Anthony type dresses with miles of skirt and tiny cinched waists.

I found these gorgeous images via Love My Dress.Net. The dress is by Claire Pettibone and I thought it may bring a little inspiration for all you would-be wood nymphs out there looking for ideas this direction. What you're looking at is pure Boho beautifully photographed by Sara Gawler . So what exactly is Boho? Defined, the 'look' borrows from early bohemian, peasant and flower child looks of the sixties. Boho is down to earth and ethereal all at once creating visions of an angel appearing out of the mist . . .With gowns sporting gossamer fabrics, the look is often topped off with head wreaths made out of fresh florals and greenery. POCKETS

Check it out! These gowns by Rosa Clara have pockets--the top one even having pockets as the focal point of the design. While some eras went for pockets, even in formal attire, the last couple years are the first we've really seen them show up and look beautiful in bridalwear. Think about it, once-upon-a-time a bride didn't have to carry anything.except a bouquet. She had maids to handle everything else. However, pockets, like collars, peplums and hoods are all functional in their way but still a stylish fashion component to be added and enjoyed. Add to that, no bridal purse, your hands are free. Brides are going to find out what the guys have known all along: life's a lot easier with pockets

SALUTE TO THE SHIRT DRESS

Today we're saluting the shirt dress. I haven't seen too many of these since the 1980s. Remember Kathleen Turner in Body Heat? She wore the white one that became iconic. Cybil Shepard in Taxi Driver wore a memorable version as well (Also white). The shirtwaist is actually a more relaxed version of the hourglass, a tailored look concentrating as much on the bodice detailing as the skirt. Typically shirtwaists have long shirt-like or billowing sleeves and full gathered skirt. The above version is spot on with the Mad Men trends, with 3/4 length sleeves and accented waistline. Shirtwaists look hot in lightweight fabrics like organza, chiffon and crepe, as well as medium weights like linen. The above version is by Michi Callica and could go be adapted to any style wedding from a garden reception to an elegant gala wedding at the Plaza.

BEST BETS FOR THE PETITE BRIDE

Modified Mermaid: The to-the-floor sash draws the eye up and tulle head pouf gives the impression of height.

One of the most important things to remember if you're under 5'4 is scale. Petite and in shape, you can wear just about any gown as long as you scale down to the right proportion. Also thinking vertically (up, up, up) it will be easier to figure out which treatments suit you best. For instance, choose a bodice and neckline that draw the eye up to your decolletage. Here’s more to consider:

GO FOR

* a gown with a panel or seam(s) running up the front. The unbroken lines give you height.

*Empire waists are one of your best options considering you go floor length. You want to keep that vertical line going.

* A V or U-neck, it gives the impression of a longer neck.

*A mermaid. If you’re slim and petite consider this style. It’s fitted like an evening gown up top and has all the bounce and swirl of a ball gown below.

*An A-line. Think of it as your very own scaled down version of a ball gown.

*Sheath and evening gown silhouettes, long and columnar; they will flatter you.

* length over volume in your skirt

*Sleeves that are long and straight.

* Best proportion is a floor length gown with veil or train of the same length.

*prints and laces as well as any motifs should be scaled down and worn on the upper portions of the body. Busy designs below the waist (even small ones) draw all eyes downward.

*Soft and sheer fabrics like crepe and chiffon that drape to the body.

PASS UP:
*any ball gown. The volume in the skirts will consume you.

*heavy, elaborate fabrics like brocade or any print or design that is large.

*Wide belts, sashes and cummerbunds interrupt the vertical lines you want to create. If you do wear a sash or belt go thin (1-1 ½ inches) and as close to the shade of your gown as you can get.

*any design with big puffy sleeves or shoulder pads.

*Any train longer than a sweep.

Using a versatile fabric like jersey with cutting edge applications, this Project Runway participant has found a cure for the ever rampant 'It's a Bridesmaid Dress' epidemic . Her philosophy on bridesmaid dresses rings so true. Let's see if you agree, "Let's be honest here- the word bridesmaid doesn't usually invoke the most beautiful image. These dresses are usually overpriced, low quality (what about weddings says "polyester please"?), and something that your friends would probably never choose to wear in the first place. "
I couldn't have said it more precisely. Jersey may just be that perfect fabric we've all been looking for for the bridesmaid. Not to mention how comfortable it is to wear and how well it travels. If you think about it, a high quality jersey can go to a formal hoop-la as well as casual get together. Put on your flat sandals and head to a chi chi beach restaurant for dinner some night. Or out to an afternoon art reception. Where would you wear the above dress after the big day? Curious about your answers . . .

DYNAMIC DUOS: Pairing Up Bouquet and Gown

I think certain flowers have a particular significance for each of us. Finding an inspiration point and blending that idea with your dress is just the beginning of working one or a few colors into an overall theme. Size and proportion are something else to consider. Some of us like the idea of carrying a huge burst of three to four different kinds of flowers in an arrangement while someone else goes for the simplicity of a small nosegay. Since flowers are a seasonal thing--tulips in spring, mums in the fall, your dress is probably going to reflect that too. Above and below are perfect examples of adding a little spring chic: bursts of baby's breath combined with lace and tulle . . .

Back on December 13, we featured some awesome images from The Vineyard Bride, a stylized shoot at the beautiful Annadel Estate Winery in Sonoma. Over the New Years holiday, photographer Shannon Stellmacher came up with some more 'How Gorgeous Are These?' pics from that fabulous shoot. I'm a true lover of black and white photography and the first two remind me of a Howard Hawks film from the 1930s--stunning beyond belief. Our wonderful model is Lori Dorfman and makeup and hair done by Julie Morgan whose work continues to enhance and beautify everyone she touches . . .

It all started with that red sash. My client Donna (above) wanted to experiment with picking up some color. How about you? Are your shoes going to be in hue? Believe me, even brides all dressed in white from veil to hem are opting for green, blue, red or yellow shoes under their gown. Actually I'm not certain this is a passing trend so much as tradition broken. White pumps and sandals with white gowns will always be with us. Now though, so will any shoe in any color that works under your gown . . .

Another happening 2012 trend is the illusion neckline. Popularized in the 1950s this style allowed modesty as well as showing some skin, albeit opaque but sexy and demure. These days illusion is found in a few varieties of sheer fabric: tulle, power netting, organza and chiffon to name a few. Designers are using softer and stretchier fibers for the max in comfort . . .

From 1700 onward, The Wedding Dress by Edwina Ehrman is a pictoral history of what brides have worn and why. I'm still perusing through it over these holidays and so far would reccommend it to any bride-to-be. In addition, anyone into fashion history will find this coffee table gem chock full of gorg photos a real boon . . . .

BRIDE CHIC: MOVING AWAY FROM THE CAKE TOP TEMPLATE

Has bridal fashion become less traditional and more in sinc with haute couture? Think of the brides of the 1960s-70s era. Did their gowns have that fashion forward edge like they do now? No. They were more like satin uniforms trimmed in Alencon lace--the stuff society expected? Bridal fashion aside, women just don't dress up like they used to. Once upon a time we dressed at least three times a day and the right morning, afternoon and evening wear was de riguer. Tune in any episode of I Love Lucy and you'll see what I'm talking about. With the invention of microfibers and ease of wash and wear, we cashed in for comfort eliminating most of the work it takes to sport the kind of chic we created not too far back. In some ways we miss all that and it's coming out in the ultimate dress up game of all: the wedding day. Thus, bridal fashion may be the last bastion designers can really practice their art as an art. So much of fashion is about manufacturing and high production. True designers love an actual niche where someone will fork over some bucks for top quality. Yes, designers want to incorporate all those couture methods no one uses anymore to craft a garment into a work of art.

Competition though sometimes grinding, typically generates excellence. The dresses here are the visions of the top designers in the world. You can see each has put some sort of couture touch or signature on each gown . . . Valentino with pleats and ruffles; Saab with beautiful fitting and one-of-a-kind laces . . . .

I hope these pictures have inspired you. I also hope we keep our casual trends going as well as moving into more of a mode of dressing up. Dressing up to go out to dinner, dressing up to do cocktails, a ride in the country. We all loved Sex and the City. I believe one of the reasons we embraced it was we understood Carrie's need to express herself through dressing. Sure her closet was improbable. And of course I practiced my suspension of disbelief just to get a good look at some of her finds . . . .

Since fashion is more about casual chic these days, there's still a glut of bridal designers all competing to make the finest gown in the finest fabrics. Each has their own version, moving more and more away from the bridal template of traditional into the more experimental realm of couture. And brides as a whole are loving it.

While it's been like spring here in Northern California Winter and Christmas are actually here. That means my next season's glam is on the way or already out on the floor of my design studio and I have to bid farewell to a few samples. While my sizes are limited (mostly size 4), the good news is, my sample markdowns usually go half off. This listing is for the ultimate in Boho, The 'Musetta' gown, a mix of imported Chantilly laces and diaphanous chiffon. The full skirt is gathered silk lined in crepe backed satin. Bodice has lace cap sleeves and is accented with a gold braid tie belt. Just a stunner and I'll sure will miss looking at this gem once it finds the right bride . . .

What could be more romantic than a tartan wedding during the holiday season? Tartans and plaids are practically synonomous with Christmas both in decor and fashion, not to mention everything from wrapping paper to Christmas cards. It took me a long time to locate an actual Scottish designer of bridal wear who specialized not only in couture but the true essence of how tartan relates to fashion. Designer Joyce Young works wool tartans into bridal wear with some real edge. For years I've been in awe of Scotsmen in kilts and the flair they have at using plaids to go formal. Will you get a load of these gowns? Tartan godets. Tartan trains and insets. Joyce is an incredible designer who pairs up these wools with the richness of shantung and taffeta. Her shops are in Glasgow, Gretna Green and London. 'Touch of Tartan' is only one collection she offers as she has a whole range of traditional as well as destination gowns to choose from.

THE VINEYARD BRIDE

Simply beyond gorgeousness! Recently I had the pleasure of working with wedding photographer extraordinaire, Shannon Stellmacher on this stylized shoot at Annadel Estate Winery, in Sonoma County. Believe me this is one spot so quaint and rustic it will take your breath away. Makeup artist and hair stylist, Julie Morgan put all of us together for this shoot and I'm so grateful for her vision every time I look at these magnificent images. The range of looks Julie created alongside our photographer is amazing. A word here about the gowns and head chic: I designed them and model Lori Dorfman brought each piece to life creating a sort of magical picture story. Special thanks to Mary of B-Jeweled for use of the exquisite necklaces and earrings and Nancy Ann Flowers who created all the lovely bouquets.

More brides than you realize actually tied the knot in December, combining their nups with a season of Christmas festivities. Above is Fabiola of Aragon who married Baudouin, the King of the Belgians. Their wedding took place on the cold winter morning of December 15, 1960. Her gown was an absolute masterpiece created by Spanish design legend Cristobal Balenciaga. Peau with a mink collar and twenty foot train, it suited this winter bride well. Balenciaga was one of a handful of couturiers who could actually design, cut, and sew his own designs. A designer's designer, his minimalist creations that were so well crafted they resembled sculptures and were considered the optimal of haute couture circa 1950s and 1960s.

Remember all the hoop-la when Madonna married Guy Ritchie back in 2000? They were hitched December 22 in a Scottish castle. Stella McCartney stepped up not only as her designer but also as maid of honor. In an ivory strapless, the always over-the-top and shock your-socks-off rock star went with a royal/princess/castle theme wearing a vintage diamond tiara from Asprey & Garrard under a lace veil.

Celine Dion married her manager Renee Angeli on Dec. 17, 1994 in Montreal, Canada. Note that her tiara weighs 7-pounds and has 2000 Austrian crystals covering it. Her gown was really a splendor by Mirella and Steve Gentile--a work of art that took 1,000 hours to make . . . .

The 1960s was a decade for Presidential daughters to tie the knot. Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon who reigned from the mid to later part of the 60s both had a pair of daughters of marrigable age. Above: On December 9, 1967, President Lyndon Johnson's eldest daughter Lynda married Marine Captain Charles Robb in a White House all decked out for Christmas. Seven bridesmaids were in floor-length red velvet gowns. Among the guests was former first daughter Alice Roosevelt who also married in the White House in 1906.

Lynda's designer was Geoffrey Beene. She chose this empire sheath silhouette in a winter-weight peau satin. Notice the border of heavy lace running vertically up the front of the gown creating an apron-like effect. Trendy at the time, was her detachable Watteau train that fell from her shoulders. Topping it off, she wore a pill box cap with a blusher and very long pouf veil.

Above: Richard Nixon's youngest daughter Julie was first to tie the knot and did so only a month before her father took office. December 22, 1968, Julie Nixon and David Eisenhower were married by Rev. Norman Vincent Peale in Manhattan's Marble Collegiate Church. Because her father was President-Elect at the time, Kleig lights, the curious and press turned up in droves. Though a White House wedding with all the trimmings was offered, Julie and David wanted a private ceremony. They managed to keep their guest list a secret amid all the change in their lives. In addition, their Grand Ballroom at the Plaza wedding reception was closed to all press.

Julie's gown was by Pricilla Kidder aka Priscilla of Boston. High-necked with pearls and beadwork, it had puffed sleeves and a long train. The bridesmaid ensembles were brocade overcoats with long Juliet sleeves.

THREE WAYS TO WINTERIZE

Are you one of those lucky brides having a Winter Wonderland Wedding? The point is to stay warm and cozy as well as ultra-chic getting to and from the ceremony. And God knows, you might be caught having to stand around in the cold so be prepared.
#1 Choose heavier fabrics: Weightier fabrics like the peau de soie dress featured here offer warmth and insulation from the cold. If expertly lined, thicker fabrics will keep the chill off especially if you’re going sleeveless. Sleeveless brides in winter climates can add a shrug or bolero in the same fiber. A matching cape is ideal—they’re roomy and unlike close fitting coats they won’t squish your dress. Don’t want to match the dress exactly? Velvet, cashmere, wool, heavy brocades all make lovely capes. If your gown is heavyweight fabric or has lots of volume (volume translates into warmth) you can even go for a shorter caplet.

#2 Make use of accessories. Wraps and stoles are great for bare-armed brides. They aren't as skimpy as they look lined properly with either batting (stuff you put in quilts) or any form of lightweight wool, they can keep you incredibly warm all night.

Add opera length gloves if you’re going sleeveless with a wrap. Long gloves can be great substitutes for sleeves due to the insulation factor they provide. As for fur, for stoles, jackets and capes, faux is chic now. It’s also surprisingly warm too. Add a muff (maybe instead of a bouquet) and your hands stay toasty.

3# Cover Your Head! Consider something with a touch of marabou or feathers or an actual hat. Remember, keeping your head and ears warm is important to keeping the rest of your body warm . . . .

Manila based, her greatest achievements in design have stemmed from expert pattern making and draping (as you can see). Mitzi admits, "My pieces are essentially architectural doused in "Chic Refinement". As a designer myself, I'm in awe of those "Architects of Fashion"--icons like Balenciaga and Langer whose talent is based in form and structuring fabric . . . .I'll gladly add Mitzi to this elite bunch.

Only recently has wedding wear for moms achieved any semblence of chic. I remember a time (80s-90s) when they couldn't find a damn thing out there that didn't make them look like an old matron from a forties flick. Fast forward 2011. Come on now, judging by these images these model/moms look more like your beautiful big sis than even the hippest, fiercest momster. But I do enjoy these picks from Brides UK offering up capsule collections just for mom. Any one of these ensembles could be reworn to an art opening or gala. Another thought here: Brides who don't like the "all dressed in white" factor might consider some of these looks. I mean, do you really have to be an older bride to dress mature . . . . .? THE PEEK-A-BOO FACTOR

You have to admit, the 1950's Rockabilly dress is tres chic right now and lots of brides are going for the look. Getting the look means first adding the right volume to your full skirt to make it stand out. Swank Underpinnings carries poufy half slips in all lengths to accentuate that 50's silhouette. As a designer of primarily 50s dresses my advice to you would be make sure your under slip is worn separately from your dress (read: yes, as in a whole separate piece). Why? You don't want to add bulk to the waistline. Wedding gowns have enough heavy duty handiwork going on inside, why add more? I know most gowns come with built-ins, but do ask your salon when placing the order to have the designer send your slip as a separate component from the gown.

Adding color underneath your dress hints at it once you lift your skirt. Or better yet, how about going for the Peek-A-Boo factor? That means that a little touch of red or purple or whatever color you want slips beyond the hemline. How that for chic . . .?

THE FASCINATOR AS MODERN ART

Claudette Colbert as Ellie Andrews, Audrey Hepburn as Jo Stockton. No, they weren't real brides but the designers, writers and producers who created them certainly were. Hollywood designers and the actresses who wore their creations influenced the way we look at weddings and fashion today. All the gowns pictured here are works of art and stellar representatives of their times. What could be more 1930s than Robert Kalloch's creation for Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night? The body-hugging bias cut was still a new, even radical concept in 1934, especially for a wedding gown. During this golden era, it was not Paris as much as Hollywood that decreed fashion. This simple satin gown with florals surrounding the neckline could be found today in a few designer collections. The look has become timeless. Attached to the cap head piece you'll see miles of chiffon netting, a light and airy fabric the designer chose because in this story, Colbert needs to become the runaway bride once she decides Clark Gable is the one. As she runs, the veil, long as it is, lifts and floats beautifully off the ground to produce a kind of 'bride in flight' look.

The Givenchy on Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face has become a favorite for brides of every decade. When clients bring in inspiration photos so I can get an idea of what they want in a gown, this photo is pulled out often. And sometimes it is not the exact same dress a bride wants so much as 'the look' it evokes, the epitome of pure, flawless design.

Above is one of the purest, most traditional wedding designs out there (the other is princess Grace's--also by a Hollywood designer, Helen Rose). I'm glad I finally found this image of Julie Andrews in Dorothy Jeakins shantung wedding gown. It's from one of the most beautiful movies ever made, The Sound of Music. Raised in an abbey by cloistered nuns, when Maria marries Captain Von Trapp she marches down the aisle alone. This really touched me when I first saw this movie as a kid. So much so that when my own day came to meet my intended and take my vows, I too walked alone and gave myself away.

The gown Elizabeth Taylor is wearing was standard for its time. Post war, the world celebrated lifts on fabric restrictions by using vast amounts of it in skirts. Bridal gowns were the ultimate show-off the hourglass shape vehicle. The MGM release of Father of the Bride coincided with Taylor's own real, life nuptials with hotel heir, Nicky Hilton. Both her own and fictional wedding gown was designed by Helen Rose.

Below right is Carrie Bradshaw's Ivory silk taffeta confection. It's actually one of the finale pieces from Vivienne Westwood's 2007 "Wake Up Cave Girl" Collection. Hand picked by Sex in the City stylist, Patricia Field, personally, I was surprised Sara Jessica didn't rate a custom designed gown for her role in the film. I mean heck! Check out Audrey Hepburn. Didn't she rate that one-of-a-kind-designed-to-fit-her-character Givenchy tulle wedding dress pictured above? The suit on the left would have been my choice . . . and . . .ultimately it was Carrie's as well.

For me 20th Century fashion is the chicest and most flattering of all time. These gowns were all inspired by Christian Dior who revolutionized fashion in 1947 with his “New Look”, a 180 turn out of the gray days of fashion following WWII. Once restrictions lifted on fabric post war, Dior had the freedom to introduce the hourglass silhouette, showing off a cinched waist atop skirts flowing in yards of silks and layers of crinoline. Recently this defined waist has made a come back and brides are loving it. . . .

CELEBRATING THE A-LINE

The hourglass wasn’t Christian Dior’s only reinvention. His A-line hit big in 1955 and stayed with us. An A-line cut is a more modified form of hourglass, bringing with it refinement and understatement. Fitted through the bodice, the A-line can have a slight to moderate flair in the skirt. Princess-Fitted bodice flowing into a skirt that has two parallel vertical seams running up front and back; can have a slight to full flare in the skirt. Very flattering. Can you tell I've been a tad bit obsessed with poufs lately? Created out of tulle or netting, poufs are a great alternative to the longer, more traditional veil. And let's face it, not all brides feel comfortable going classic these days. Poufs are uber-chic as well as practical. They pair up nicely with just about any dress and there's none of that dragging yards of tulle around come reception time. Finally, they have the ooooooooh la la factor! Whimsy and the element of surprise when you make a grand entrance . . .

My 'Eva' gown above got an eerie twist a few years back when we topped off a relatively tame bridal shoot by adding this pink wig (in place of a veil) as well as gloves and, voila! our Goth bride was created. Actually, this would be a great Halloween wedding idea for the bride who actually is into Goth . . .of course not everyone embraces this idea which makes it all the more original . . .

SAMPLE SALE TUESDAY

For all you brides on a budget I'm still selling some of the photographic samples. So I know you're asking, 'What the heck is a photographic sample?' It is a mock up made up just for the photo shoot in materials close to but not yet ready for prime time such as the almost priceless silks in which they are custom ordered by clients. It can also be the original and yummy silk dress I make that is two or three seasons old. In any case your sample will be one-of-a-kind and handmade, have couture techniques like hand-picked zipper and hand-tacked linings no machinery can emulate. Before I sell these gems rest assured they do go through proper refurbishing and cleaning. Fabric samples on request.

Today's gem is from last season whipped up in an eggshell wool crepe. Would you wear wool on your wedding day? In summer? 'Priscilla' is the first wool crepe gown to make it into one of my collections. Whenever we think wool, winter wardrobes usually come to mind. Light weight wool crepes and jerseys are actually great fabrics thru spring and summer as long as the silhouettes lend themselves well to drapey fabrics and bare arms and back. And don’t worry, wool breathes well as long as it’s lined in lightweight fabrics like China silk.

FRIENDLY FUR OPTIONS

I don't like faux fur despite it's being totally PC and hot right now. Most of what's out there reminds me of fake mink stoles for kids found in those 1950s-60s 'dress up' kits. And while none of us like to think about animals getting killed and/or endangered, there's nothing like wearing real fur in a cold climate. The happy medium is of course you can wear all the fur and feathers you want as long as no animal was bumped off. So what furs are authentic, chic and safe to wear? Hot right now is Tibetan Lamb, Moulton Lamb, goat (Angora). Did you know lambs and goats need to be sheared every six months? (read: sheared not killed) Angora goats for instance need to be sheared early spring and fall. Notice I say need here. Early shearing will keep them cool and comfortable in summer and the fall shearing has to be early enough so they can grow that lovely fur out just right to keep warm come winter . . .

Feathers are another option for winterizing yourself. Marabou and ostrich have long been associated with chic and warmth. These delectable winter treats by Sasso are a bit jazzy if not retro but might be just the look you've been wanting . . .

THE LONG VEIL MYSTIQUE

Depends on where you live, but I find this time of year when weddings move indoors, brides tend to go traditional donning the full regalia of a classic bride. Topping of a look often includes a long, flowing, veil. So what you ask is considered a long veil? Let's start at the ‘finger tip’ length and work all the way down to the twenty-five foot cathedral. Long veils convey a romantic mood via all that added gossamer sheer. . . . . .

Long Veil Lengths

Fingertip-Most popular length; can be worn by nearly every figure type with most silhouettes.

           Waltz-Falls anywhere between knee and ankle.
          Chapel-Considered formal. Extends about a two feet beyond the hemline.
          Cathedral-Most formal. Extends three feet or more beyond the hem.
          Double Tier-Two layers, typically the shorter one a blusher but not always.

Long Veil Styles

Pouf-Pictured directly below, width of veil is gathered at the crown and can be attached to a headpiece. Generally made out of tulle or English netting.
Dropped-Second picture below. This veil is actually dropped onto the head in a single layer of tulle or lace; often bordered with lace or ribbon. The Mantilla is a type of dropped veil.

Yellow Rose just happens to be one of my fave head chic sites on Etsy. Sharon creates a vintage-nature inspired collection of hats, fascinators and head pieces to top off your bridal look. She loves finding authentic vintage laces and other rare accouterments for her projects at antique markets. A native of Ohio, she learned millinery studying under professional costume designers in Kentucky. Hat making quickly became Sharon's craft and passion as she launched the Yellow Rose label in 2010. Right now Sharon is living in Germany with her husband which explains the Sound of Music styled landscapes gracing many of her photos. THE ART OF WEARING GLOVES

If you're getting married this time of year or heading into the winter months, thank God for gloves. They do help warm up hands and arms. Any season gloves will lend that aspect of drama and really tie your bridal look together. Whether you opt for crocheted shorties or long, sleek opera length, there are no rules anymore about what sort of gloves you have to wear with your gown. You can go with the classic white and ivory or jazz up your look with any length, color, texture, even pattern. Just like some brides are showing some pizazz wearing different color shoes with their gown, glove color is an option you have as well. Experiment, then go right ahead and be adventuresome!

GETTING ABOARD: ALL ABOUT TRAINS AND BUSTLES . . .

A gown with a train suggests formality; typically the longer the train, the more formal the gown. So what is a train exactly? A train is that extension in the back of the skirt that follows when you move. There are two types of trains: built-in and detachable. Built-ins are integrated in the actual skirt pattern when the dress is made. These are the kind that are pulled up and bustled after the ceremony. A detachable train is a separate component, not integrated in the skirt pattern. Detachables are usually removed after the ceremony, although I’ve seen them bustled every so often when brides want to keep that bustled look going for the party.

Bustling defined is the gathering and tacking up of the train so that the bride can move around freely post ceremony. Once a gown is bustled it goes through a kind of metamorphosis as does the bride in it. There are two kinds of bustling techniques: overbustles and underbustles (French). Usually, bustling is secured with hooks and/or ribbons (narrow strips of grosgrain). Over bustling is the easiest and consists of picking up and tacking the skirt to the waist for chapel and cathedral lengths; or behind the knee for sweeps. Underbustling goes the other way—down and under, fastening to points on the under slip. Longer trains can take a combination of both over and under bustling all at once and the results can be stunning. Additional or custom bustling is done after the bodice fitting is completed. How many (more) bustle points you chose is up to you and the estimation of your alterations person. Keep in mind not every dress bustles well. Examples include ball gowns with skirts in lightweight layers like tulle or organza. The amount of layered skirts present problems. The bustling is done layer by layer which is time consuming and expensive, and you’d have to absolutely love the result to go through all that hassle. Also some gowns with sweep trains, godets or fishtails don’t bustle well. Overall, most dresses do bustle beautifully and are a joy to wear. A bustled train remains one of the most elegant and romantic elements of the wedding gown . . . .

THE CHANEL BRIDE

The great Mademoiselle Chanel spanned several eras of changing fashion. Her most notable signatures are close fitting cloche style hats, halters, separates, jerseys and strands of many different pearl necklaces all worn at once. Until her retirement in 1939, she was the probably the world's most influential designer. She made a comeback in the 1950s ushering in her most enduring contribution to fashion, the Chanel suit still popular today.
I see the Chanel bride of today much like Mademoiselle herself. Classy and fabulous, sophisticated and quirky. Above all stylish. The bride above is in separates: a Chantilly lace halter paired up with a long shantung skirt with a sweep train. All her accessories are inspired by Chanel.

BRIDES OF THE GOLDEN LIGHT

What could be more bridal than a cloud of white tulle and Chantilly lace? Add to that the lace is backed with a blue/gray lining. With peach accents it reminds me of a muted pastel sunset. The skirt is four layers of tulle and a separate slip of crinoline and tulle. Detailed touches include a row of buttons accenting the back and it is all pulled together with a blue and peach sash. Can be ordered with detachable pearl straps. The headpiece is coral-peachy handmade silk florals attached to a tulle bow.

Winter is almost here. Holiday and post New Year weddings can be incredibly festive and magical. Yes, the back drop of snow and raw climate can be challenging; working it you can create a haute chic look all your own.

Ever dreamed of looking like and keeping as warm as a Czarina? Covering your gown with a cape is ideal—they’re roomy and unlike close fitting coats, they won’t squish your dress. The cape here is white suede with marabou and faux fur trim with a cathedral train. The hat and muff are made of faux Moulton lamb. Velvet, cashmere, wool, heavy brocades all make lovely capes. If your gown is heavyweight fabric or has lots of volume (volume translates into warmth) you can even go for a shorter caplet.

Wraps and stoles are great for bare-armed brides. They may look skimpy but will keep you incredibly warm even if they are made out of faux fur. Add opera length gloves if you’re going sleeveless. Long gloves can be great substitutes for sleeves due to the insulation factor they provide. As for fur, for stoles, jackets and capes, faux is chic now. It’s also surprisingly warm too. Add a muff (maybe instead of a bouquet) and your hands stay toasty.

There’s a reason for structured, heavy fabrics like the luxe peau de soie below: warmth and insulation from the cold. If expertly lined, thicker fabrics will keep the chill off. This authentic vintage sixties bouffant has Alencon lace appliques dappled over the bodice and skirt. The satin pillbox hat with cathedral length veil was custom made to bring out the full Jackiesque look of this gown . . .

Redheads come in all shades: auburn, ginger, cinnamon, chestnut, henna, strawberry blond, carrot top. Hair is not all that characterizes the real redhead though. Fair, sometimes alabaster skin with a peach undertone and freckles are all hallmark of the quintessential celtic beauty, marking shades like ivory, peach and eggshell a redhead's best pick. Why are these yellow tones best for you? Your complexion is most likely fair and pale ergo most whites and stark whites will wash out your complexion. On the other hand, ivory and eggshell tones will warm up skin tone and once they're put on do seem to belong to redheads exclusively. Silk whites--which is to say off or muted whites like the shade in the header photo and last photos below can work for the bride with red hair as long as they stay matte or muted . . .
